The Mengão got off to a flying start, going up within the first 15-minutes. Lázaro whipped in a fast, flat corner kick to the near post which was met by the towering Gustavo Henrique whose header flew in off the far post.

Set-pieces would prove a crucial element of Flamengo’s attack on the night as they would double the lead not ten minutes later.

From the right-hand side this time Marinho’s corner is flicked on at the near post before Diego, in acres of space in the six-yard area, quickly adjusted his body to divert into the net.

Having doubled their lead Dorival Júnior’s team eased their pressure and slowly Coritiba grew back into the encounter and came close twice just before half-time.

Finding himself in unfamiliar territory Luciano Castán fired over the bar before Léo Gamalho wasted the visitor’s best chance of the game, putting his header over from close range.

A less eventful second half followed with Coritiba struggling to fashion many goal-scoring opportunities as Flamengo were unable to find that finishing touch to add to their two-goal lead.
