Inter striker Romelu Lukaku and his AC Milan counterpart Rafael Leao have been identified as the two potentially key player if their teams are to chase down Lazio and Roma (and potentially Juventus) in the race for Serie A top four.
This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who suggest that the Belgian and Portuguese superstars could be the players to have their say in what the top end of the league table looks like at the end of the season.
As things stand, Inter and Milan will not like what they see when they look at the Serie A table.
The Nerazzurri are outside of the top four, with their win against Empoli yesterday not enough to make up for the woeful run of matches that had preceded it.
Meanwhile, the Rossoneri are currently level on points with Roma in fourth place, although if the Giallorossi were to get any result from this evening’s match against Atalanta then they would be back in control, leaving both Milan clubs out in the cold.
Moreover, the suspension of a fifteen-point deduction to Juventus has meant that the Bianconeri recently rocketed up the table to occupy a third place position, making life even more complicated for both Inter and Milan.
There are still seven matches left for both of the two city rivals, who will play out a two-legged derby clash in the Champions League semifinals next month.
However, they will need to rely on some good performances from their best players if they are to do so.
For Inter, the Gazzetta identify Lukaku as the man who can drag the Nerazzurri out of their difficult period and have them go on a run which sees them catch back up.
The Belgian has struggled for long parts of this season, but his match-winning performance against Empoli yesterday afternoon showed that he is still capable of being the player who makes the difference, and if he can keep that up it would surely play a big role in a top four comeback.
Meanwhile, Leao reasserted himself with his match-winning brace in the Rossoneri’s 2-0 victory against Lecce.
The 23-year-old had been Milan’s key man down the stretch as they won the Serie A title last season, whilst he also had a crucial role to play in reaching the Champions League quarterfinals by knocking out Napoli.
Whilst just finishing in the top four of the Serie A table may not be as glamorous of an achievement as either of those two, the Gazzetta suggest that the Portuguese could be just as crucial if the Rossoneri are to get it over the line.
