BVB dominated the match up until the surprise equaliser. The Black & Yellows subsequently managed pretty much nothing. The shot count stood at 8-7 in BVB's favour in the second period (14-3 before the break). Borussia only had noteworthy chances again in stoppage time. The match facts.

First-half siege: Dortmund's 14 shots at goal in the first half is a club record this season.

Defensive playmaker: Mats Hummels touched the ball more than any other player in the first half (68 times) and was the toughest-tackling player on the pitch with a 91% tackle win rate.

Top scorer point and goal scorer: Julian Brandt now sits alongside Niclas Füllkrug and Donyell Malen as Borussia Dortmund's joint-top goalscorer in the Bundesliga this season. He previously already topped the BVB scorer point chart (now 12 scorer points). Brandt scored the second direct free-kick goal of his Bundesliga career, the first having come for Leverkusen against Bremen in September 2015.

The captain leads the way: Emre Can was involved in the most challenges of all Borussia players (32) and won an impressive 66% of them.

No win in final game of the year once again: For the fifth year in succession, BVB have failed to win their final match before the winter break.

Drawing streak on the road: Mainz drew for the sixth away game in succession. The last such run was put together by Otto Rehhagel's Werder Bremen in 1992.
