Two candidates ruled out of Sheffield Wednesday hunt as managerial search gathers pace | OneFootball

Jose Morais and Gus Poyet are not thought to be contenders for the Sheffield Wednesday manager’s job, according to a report from The Athletic.

The Owls are searching for a new boss after taking the surprise decision to sack Tony Pulis from his position on Monday evening.

Pulis led the club for just 10 matches before Dejphon Chansiri made the decision, saying: “The performances and results have not been of the level expected’, before adding “There are also other issues which have had a bearing on this decision.”

As a result the South Yorkshire side are on the lookout for a swift appointment with a flurry of names being linked.

Former Barnsley boss Morais is one name to be linked, while former Sunderland boss Poyet has also been tipped as a potential candidate for the job.

However according to Nancy Frostick of The Athletic, neither manager is thought to be in contention.

She wrote: “While the search for a replacement has begun with Chansiri already working through a shortlist, both familiar names and more adventurous choices are thought to be up for consideration this time around.

“The Athletic understands that in the early stages of the recruitment process, former Barnsley boss Jose Morais is not a front runner.

“It is also thought that Gus Poyet is not in contention despite being the favourite with the bookmakers.”

The Verdict

These are incredibly worrying times for Sheffield Wednesday.

While a victory over Middlesbrough will have papered over the cracks, there’s no doubt that recent events are incredibly worrying for supporters.

The club has lots of work to do if they’re to avoid relegation – a fate that would be disastrous for a club of its size.
