In January 2018, Liverpool signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton for a transfer fee of €84.65 million.

Since then, Van Dijk has made 130 appearances for Liverpool. Liverpool have won four major trophies since Van Dijk’s arrival.

Van Dijk was the runner-up for the 2019 Ballon d’Or, which highlights that he has played well for Liverpool in recent times.

The Dutchman has missed the majority of the 2020-21 campaign due to a knee injury. With that being the case, Manchester City centre-back Ruben Dias has arguably been the best defender in the Premier League this season.

Dias is averaging a WhoScored player rating of 7.00 across the 2020-21 season.

Journalist Simon Johnson has suggested that Dias does not get the same amount of praise as Van Dijk. Twitter user @lfcnxsir replied to Johnson’s tweet explaining why Van Dijk deserves more praise than Dias.

ANFIELD WATCH VERDICT

We completely agree with the tweet from @lfcnxsir. Before 2018, Liverpool had not won a trophy since 2012 (League Cup).

Van Dijk’s arrival transformed Liverpool. Before Dias arrived at Manchester City, they were already winning trophies under Pep Guardiola.

Therefore, Van Dijk’s impact on Liverpool has been far greater than Dias’ impact on Manchester City.
