AC Milan were victorious against Slovan Bratislava on Tuesday night, but the result was far from a good one. The Rossoneri were unconvincing once again and questions are being asked.
There are points of a season where three points can no longer be seen as a sole positive, Milan have approached this point now. Questions are being consistently asked about the system employed by Paulo Fonseca, given the side were once again questionable against a ‘weaker side’.
For comparison, against Real Madrid, Fonseca got his side spot on, and this showed in the performance and result. In Slovakia though, the performance was not up to scratch and for large periods the squad looked somewhat lost, devoid of any ideas.
This is without even mentioning the defence, which in itself is problematic.
As Tuttosport (via Milan News) highlights, the Diavolo have now conceded 22 goals in 17 games, after conceding another two against Slovan. The reason for the consistent leak remains unknown at least to the head coach, but the problems are seemingly blatant.
Currently, there is no solidity in the defence, and Fonseca continues to change his backline, which only harms the players in the long run, and with constant changes to partners, there can be no time to warm up to a specified partner.
The problem possibly deepens too. Systematically, Fonseca’s side are flawed and the midfield partnership of Tijjani Reijnders and Youssouf Fofana is ‘not enough’. Maybe the solution is to enter a new player into the mix, perhaps Ismael Bennacer as suggested by the paper.
Ultimately, something must change, and Fonseca must look at the bigger picture.
