It seems that Santiago Gimenez has risen up through all the other candidates to become the most likely striker signing for AC Milan, according to a report.
This morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews) talks about the difficulties in getting Joshua Zirkzee, who has long been at the top of the management’s list of preferences, but the €15m commission demands have made them stop and reflect.
Gimenez is a name that has always been on said list, given that in the last two seasons has scored 49 goals in 86 games for Feyenoord and has established himself as one of the best No.9s across the European scene.
The Mexico international was actually proposed to Milan a year ago and at the end of April, technical director Geoffrey Moncada also had a meeting with the agents of Gimenez, who at that time was only considered an alternative to Zirkzee.
That particular summit served more than anything else to keep contacts with his entourage alive, yet now the scenario has changed and the 23-year-old is now the man who the directors are really thinking of going for.
He would cost €50m which is a sizeable investment, but is still cheaper than Zirkzee (€40m release clause plus €15m commissions) and Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig (€65m clause).
Gimenez will be involved in the Copa America with Mexico at the end of the month and therefore Milan may look to move quickly to avoid the risk of more goals with his country inflating that asking price.
