AC Milan do have an alternative transfer target in mind as the Youssouf Fofana negotiations continue to cause frustration, but Paulo Fonseca is also drawing up his own solutions.
This morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via PianetaMilan) reports that if the Fofana talks with Monaco are not unblocked soon then the management could explore a deal for Manu Koné of Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Koné is valued at €15m and he is currently at the Olympics in Paris with the French national team, while he is a player that Milan have been linked with before when he was at Toulouse, but he chose the Bundesliga side.
Geoffrey Moncada and co. believe that his characteristics – as a mezzala who can play a bit deeper if needed – could well be a good fit for Fonseca’s way of playing, even if Fofana remains the priority at the moment.
With the first game of the season against Torino now less than a fortnight away, Fonseca does not want to be caught unprepared if a defensive midfielder does not arrive and that is why he is working on internal solutions for the double pivot.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been used in the tandem in front of the defence in preseason following Christian Pulisic’s shift inside to become the playmaker, and Yunus Musah looked good in a deeper role against Real Madrid last week.
It may have to be the Englishman or the American for the first game or few games while waiting for help from the mercato, especially with the management taking a patient stance on negotiating over targets.
