Tuttosport: Barella at Milan and Tonali at Inter – the background on what could have been | OneFootball

There will be an all-Italian battle in the midfield tonight as Nicolo Barella and Sandro Tonali will face off in the derby between Inter and AC Milan, but it could have been the other way around.

This morning’s edition of Tuttosport (via MilanNews) write that Barella and Tonali could actually have been putting on the opposite shirt to the ones that they will be tonight, when they will respectively lead the midfields of Inter and Milan.

Before Inter found an agreement with Cagliari for Barella, Milan tried to sign the midfielder but they were ultimately put off by Giulini’s high demands and eventually the Bennacer-Tonali duo was assembled.

On the contrary, Inter had also tried for Tonali before Suning decided not to make the funding available, with the then-Brescia midfielder even agreeing terms. In the end, Tonali’s Rossoneri faith made the difference and he ended up playing for his boyhood club.
