Thomas Tuchel was surprisingly appointed as the new Bayern Munich boss following the dismissal of Julian Nagelsmann on Friday.

While managing Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint Germain, Tuchel has been victim of Bayern’s dominance, but this time he’s excited to be on the other end of it all.

“When you work abroad for a while, you recognize Bayern’s value even more than when you’re playing against them in the league,” said Tuchel to club media.

“Bayern are simply one of the biggest clubs in Europe with a big reputation.

“My first Bundesliga win was against Bayern, with Mainz. There have been a few defeats as well. It’s the highest standard in the Bundesliga. There were bitter defeats with Dortmund, in the Pokal final, then some revenge in the Pokal semifinal.

“You always remember the games against Bayern especially when you get a positive result, because it’s so rare, because you’re always the underdog.”

“Then I had the opportunity to play against Bayern in the Champions League final with PSG. It was very close, we lost narrowly. But in all these games, Bayern radiate more, the strength, the power, the calm. I’m proud to have been part of these experiences.

The international break means Tuchel will have to wait to completely get in tune with his new squad. However with his first match in charge against rivals and current Bundesliga leaders Dortmund, he hopes to get up and running quickly.

“I don’t want to talk too much about myself. I hope we can find a quick connection. It’s an unusual time of the season to be joining,” he said. “It’s happened very quickly and it’s surprising. We have to adapt quickly”

“Football is my passion, and at this level there’s something special every day. I really believe in the potential right now. I’m happy to be on the other side now and hopefully give opponents the feeling that they sometimes don’t have a chance.”

Bayern currently sit one point off top spot in Germany and play Manchester City in the Champions League quarter-finals.
