Julian Nagelsmann will not be returning as coach of Bayern Munich this summer after the DFB announced on Friday that the 34-year-old has extended his contract with the German national team.

The news begs the question who Bayern will turn to instead in their pursuit of a coach to replace Thomas Tuchel, who is set to leave the club at the end of the season.

Bayern’s recent progression to the Champions League semi-finals has sparked talk that Tuchel could be persuaded to stay on, but the man himself gave those suggestions a short shrift when asked about them in his press conference ahead of this weekend’s meeting with Union Berlin.

“That’s so much subjunctive,” he said.

“I have an agreement with the club [to part ways in the summer], it has been communicated and it stands.”

Tuchel also admitted that he was unsurprised by the news that Nagelsmann is set to coach Die Mannschaft beyond this summer’s European Championship.

“I expected it when Rudi Völler extended as well,” he added.

“From the outside, I have the feeling they work well together. It gives the national team clarity, continuity and hopefully momentum for the Euros.”
