But Mason Mount eventually quelled Chelsea's concerns when he connected beautifully on a teasing cutback from Timo Werner.

The Blades didn't give up however, and they were rewarded when Antonio Rudiger turned the ball into his own net after 59 minutes, ending Thomas Tuchel's run of clean sheets as Chelsea manager.

Tuchel was in shock when Chelsea were not immediately awarded a penalty after Timo Werner was clearly brought down in the box by by goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Almost two minutes passed until VAR intervened to review, and eventually, award the spot-kick.

Jorginho settled things from 12 yards out as Chelsea moved into fifth on the table, just one point behind fourth-placed Liverpool.

"It was a tough game to watch," Tuchel said after the game. "Many situations where it was difficult and many things can happen. Lots of long balls and crosses.

"We could control the game in the opponent half for many minutes, but then you get the deep ball in your half. They had some self-confidence because if their recent wins. I am happy with the responses to the questions we were asked.

"We were lucky in the beginning not to concede first. We were not aggressive enough. But then you want to play with a clean sheet. Normally it should not happen between goalkeeper and defender but mistakes happen. The response was good though."
