According to Sky Sports, Tottenham were offered the chance to sign Argentine forward Angel Correa in exchange as part of the move but the North London outfit opted for a cash-only deal.

Trippier has been with Spurs since joining from Burnley in 2015, making 114 appearances for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Despite featuring regularly last season, the full-back admitted he has performed below expectations and has been allowed to leave for the Spanish capital.

Atletico are currently undergoing an overhaul of their squad having allowed several first-team stars to leave this summer. Defenders Lucas Hernandez, Juanfran, Diego Godin and Filipe Luis have all departed, whilst midfielder Rodri and forward Antoine Griezmann have joined Manchester City and Barcelona respectively.

Trippier is set to become Atletico’s sixth major signing of the summer, joining the likes of Porto duo Hector Herrera and Felipe, Real Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente and the £113m club-record capture of Benfica starlet Joao Felix.

Trippier’s departure leaves Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters as the club’s options at right-back, whilst Juan Foyth can also deputise at full-back. Spurs have been linked with a move out-of-contract Brazil international, Dani Alves.
