Whenever the old chestnut 'assist-machine' gets sprinkled into a football debate, every football fan tends to have their go-to personification of the term.

For some it might be Kevin De Bruyne, once upon a time it may have even been Mesut Ozil, but, in modern football, it wouldn't be a surprise if many were to plump for Trent Alexander-Arnold.

When it comes to the business of assists, TAA is the CEO, regular popping up on the Liverpool right with crucial contributions to their attacking play.

While the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota tend to take the headlines, it is often the precise work of Trent that sets them up.

It feels like the young Scouser has been assisting his teammates for decades, so much so that it is easy to forget just how young he is.

In fact, the talismanic star is only celebrating his 23rd birthday today, having already achieved more in the game than many could ever dream.

His contributions bombing up the right flank have seen Liverpool end their painful Premier League drought, win the Champions League and earned him the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Add to that a European Super Cup, a Club World Cup and two appearances in the PFA Team of the Year and you begin to realise just how special this kid actually is.

Having booked their spot in the FIFA Club World Cup by virtue of their Champions League triumph in 2019, Liverpool went into the tournament as favourites.

While they would go on to win it, they genuinely struggled to really set the championship alight, relying on late winners to get by.

One of those late winners, in the semi-final clash with Mexican side Monterrey, came after Firmino stroked home from a sumptuous little ball from Alexander-Arnold.

He might be known for his booming, swinging crosses, but TAA showed his delicate side to pick out Firmino through a glut of opposition defenders.

Superb - what vision.

It is actually terrifying to think what TAA might go on to achieve with still so much of his career ahead of him.

You can certainly see him becoming a Liverpool captain one day and following in the footsteps of the likes of Jordan Henderson and Steven Gerrard.

For now, however, we'll just celebrate the present. Happy birthday, Trent!
