England’s World Cup squad were paid a wholesome visit by one of the country’s all-time great players, David Beckham, ahead of their quarter-final clash with France.
The Three Lions face the daunting task of stopping a high-flying French side, riding on the coat-tails of a Kylian Mbappe, that is playing some quite astonishing football.
Mbappe, who was a crucial cog in the France machine that won the World Cup in Russia, has once again shown he is the man for the big occasion with some of his performances in Qatar.
The 23-year-old bagged himself two thunderous strikes against Poland, reinforcing the narrative that he is just a bit of a cheat code in the game.
The question on the lips of fans all over the world now is, can England stop him?
Gareth Southgate’s side have been imperious so far as they marched to the final eight with relative ease.
However, in France, the face their sternest test yet – one they are going to have to be at their absolute best to pass.
So, with that in mind, former captain Beckham made his way down to the training ground to have a chat with the young squad and, judging by some of their reactions, it went down a treat.
Bukayo Saka warmed the hearts of fans as he sheepishly approached Beckham to ask for a picture, but it was a chat with Trent Alexander-Arnold that many found fascinating.
Beckham, long regarded as one of the great free-kick kings of his generation, chatting with one of modern football’s dead-ball masters was always going to catch the eye.
Beckham was able to share some of the wisdom imparted on him by Sir Alex Ferguson as Alexander-Arnold listened intently.
You can check it out in the footage below.
Brilliant – just look at Trent’s reaction when Beckham complimented his crossing ability.
It seems, for Beckham at least, that consistency in technique was key. Doing the same thing, no matter how monotonous, over and over again was the cornerstone of building his reputation as a dead-ball wizard.
For Alexander-Arnold, who is already globally renowned for his free-kick nous, the chat with Beckham will have gone a long way.
The Liverpool star is often criticised for his lack of defensive ability with said critics ignoring what he offers going forward.
Getting the seal of approval from Beckham will mean a lot to the young Scouser.
