Q: Will Angelo Fulgini move to a bigger club for next season? Maybe to a mid-table Premier League side for example? Bruno, Twitter.

Yes and no. Yes, a move is likely with just a year left on his contract. Angers’ attacking midfielder was close to joining Borussia Mönchengladbach in January before a deadline day collapse due to Gladbach failing to show up for negotiations. Burnley had a winter loan bid rejected after making an offer last summer when Feyenoord were also unable to get a late deal done. Angers initially wanted €15m before agreeing to a €12m deal with Gladbach but, needing to sell, that could drop further this summer.

Sevilla are also interested in the 25-year-old ahead of this summer’s window, according to L’Équipe, but that may be a step too far for the Frenchman. Fulgini is a neat, consistent, technical midfielder but, based on the evidence at Angers, he lacks the outright vision and quality to play as a creative attacking fulcrum at a higher level. Links with Burnley, this current incarnation of ‘Gladbach, Feyenoord and PSV are all good fits as a result. A move to Sevilla or an upper mid-table Premier League team, such as Newcastle, Wolves, Leicester or West Ham, could be risky for those clubs, depending on where they see the former Valenciennes man fitting into their squads.

A top-eight Ligue 1 club, such as Lille or Nice, might be best for Fulgini’s development, allowing him the chance to impose himself on a team playing more positive football in an environment he’s comfortable with and proven in while potentially exposing him to European competition for the first time. Fulgini is undoubtedly key for a struggling Angers but he’s yet to pass 10 league goal contributions in single a season. Although he deserves a chance to do so, he still has much to prove.
