It was Peterborough who bought Ivan Toney from Newcastle United in 2018.

The deal agreed was a £350,000 transfer fee, with payments spread over three years.

The Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealing this seven months ago in an interview (see below).

In that interview he also explained (also see below) that when selling Ivan Toney to Brentford, a sell-on clause was inserted.

So Peterborough will benefit from the Ivan Toney deadline day transfer.

MacAnthony refused in this interview to say exactly what Peterborough would be entitled to, however, he said that whatever they will get from Brentford, Newcastle United are entitled to 30% of it. So NUFC not getting 30% of the £40m Brentford will receive, instead Newcastle getting 30% of whatever Peterborough’s cut proves to be.

Chelsea are after a proven goalscorer to be their new No 9 and have been linked with a move for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

Toney has less than a year left on his contract and was left out of Brentford’s first two Premier League games against Crystal Palace and Liverpool.

The 28-year-old striker has a lucative offer from Al Ahli and Chelsea would not be able to match the wages on offer from Saudi Arabia, but can offer Premier League football and the chance to remain in West London.

Al Ahli, who have former Premier League players Riyad Mahrez, Edouard Mendy and Roberto Firmino in their squad, have yet to meet Brentford’s valuation of the England striker’

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony speaking on his ‘Hard Truth’ podcast on 17 January 2024 about the fee and the sell-on clauses when Ivan Toney moved to Peterborough from Newcastle United in August 2018:

“Newcastle didn’t want to sell Ivan Toney to us, they wanted him to move on loan.

“But we don’t loan strikers so we invited Newcastle to share in Ivan’s future success with a sell-on fee.

“They agreed and they wanted 50% of any future transfer profit.

“That was never going to happen as we were paying a fee for Ivan as well, so we settled on 30%.

“We paid Newcastle a transfer fee of £350k spread over three years.

“We have received £10 million so far from Brentford and we will receive X amount – I’m not allowed to say the number – of any future profit and Newcastle will receive 30% of what we get from us.

“We earn money every time Ivan moves and so do Newcastle.

“That’s how these deals are structured and I’m all for it. It’s like a chain reaction and it’s the best thing.

“We sold George Boyd to Hull for £1.8 million with a sell-on and they sold him on to Burnley we got another £300k.

“We earned a few hundred grand more when Crystal Palace sold Dwight Gayle to Newcastle. Dagenham would have earned well from that deal as well after selling Gayle to us.
