Football journalist Alan Nixon has taken to Twitter to claim that Brentford lost interest in signing Nottingham Forest defender Joe Worrall after being quoted a fee that they believed to be too high.

The Bees had long been linked with a move for the Forest centre back this summer and are said to have held talks with the Reds over a potential deal.

However it has now been claimed that they felt a deal for the 24-year-old would’ve been too costly, which in the end led to them signing Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer instead.

Nixon also goes on to state that the Hoops dropped their original asking price for the Norwegian, which caused the West London club to switch their attentions from Worrall to Ajer.

Worrall is currently under contract at the City Ground until the summer of 2024 and has yet to have given any indication that he would be looking to leave the club during this transfer window.

The defender has developed into a key player for his hometown club, making over 130 appearances for the Reds since graduating from their academy.

The Verdict

I think many people at Forest will have breathed a huge sigh of relief when Brentford decided to switch their attentions to signing Ajer instead of Worrall, with the Reds sure to want to keep a player who is so key to everything that they want to achieve.

It is clear that the Reds have set out exactly what they want for the centre back and unless that fee is paid, he won’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

Worrall himself deserves credit for not trying to force a move away from the City Ground and its clear from this that he is happy to stay put in his hometown for the time being.

It will certainly be interesting to see how much money he is sold for further down the line, with there sure to be more interest if he continues to perform well.
