According to the Express&Star, the 25-year-old was given the choice over which club he would join, with the Baggies re-signing him for £3 million.

Johnston spent the latter half of last season on loan at The Hawthorns, scoring seven goals and picking up two assists in 20 games, as West Brom finished fifth.

He has made 93 appearances during his time at Celtic, coming through the club's academy. However, a lack of action has seen him linked with a permanent exit from the club throughout the summer.

Nevertheless, after a terrific stay with West Brom, he will complete a medical later today, as per reports, with the transfer window slamming shut at 11pm on Friday night.

Johnston and West Brom are a perfect match

It emerged on Wednesday evening that the Baggies had matched a bid from Burnley, leaving the deal in the hands of the winger, a situation that would have disappointed Clarets boss Scott Parker.

Johnston was electric under Carlos Corberan last season, and formed a real connection with The Hawthorns faithful as West Brom finished in the play-off places.

A defeat to Southampton in the semi-finals was extremely disheartening for the club, but with the 25-year-old making his return, he will hope to go one better this year.

His performance against Huddersfield Town in just his ninth appearance for the club typified all the reasons why Corberan has brought him back to the club, as Johnston scored twice while he assisted Okay Yoksulu as his team ran out 4–1 winners.

Johnston could now make his second debut, and his first permanent one, against Swansea City on Saturday, as West Brom look to continue their unbeaten start to the campaign.

West Brom's transfer state of play

After it was reported by Sky Sports' Rob Dorsett earlier this month that the Baggies were close to breaching PSR rules, they have had to be shrewd with their business, but this could lead to a potential departure before tomorrow's deadline.

Tom Fellows has been the subject of an £11 million bid from Ipswich Town (09:26am, 28/08/24), while Southampton are reportedly looking at sending a £10 million offer West Brom's way.

If their financial status is as poor as has been stated, then Corberan may have to sell his talented youngster to cover the fee for Johnston, but this is still an ongoing saga.

The Baggies have also been trying for Preston North End striker Will Keane in the last week, and despite a bid of £500k nearly being tabled for the 31-year-old, West Brom have now cooled their interest in Keane, as per Express & Star.

With just over a day to go until the window slams shut, there could still be an influx of business before the deadline, with West Brom looking to hold on to their key youngster.
