Transfer Story: Chelsea turning to 27-year-old elite player would mark change in recruitment tact

There is a new transfer rumour that has come out this week that if Chelsea did go ahead and complete, would mark a change in recruitment tact.

The Blues had a very quiet transfer window and signed basically nobody to improve the team and in fact, they made the squad weaker. All they managed to do really was a few loan deals out.

EXCLUSIVE! Enzo Maresca under pressure with Blues hierarchy unhappy and concerned with results and form!

Joao Felix was one of the players who went out on loan to join AC Milan and despite a good start there, he has not had a good review in the last couple of games.

One player who is getting rave reviews though is versatile defender and midfielder Rentao Veiga, who joined Juventus on loan last month so he could play as a centre back. He is having a superb time there right now, and Juventus fans are urging their club to buy him on a permanent deal come the end of this season when his loan is up.

The overall recruitment strategy is buying young and unproven players, but the fans have been complaining on mass about this strategy and want more proven and experienced players in the door.

They may get their wish

If the latest transfer rumour is correct and Chelsea really are back in for striker Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting, then this might mark a change of thinking from the decision makers at the club.

This is because Gyokeres will be 27-years-old in June when the next transfer window opens, and he will be the oldest player that this ownership would have signed since the early days when Todd Boehly was leading the recruitment.

He is also what I would describe as a proven and elite option, as well as carrying some solid experience now. A far cry from the raw young players they keep signing.
