According to the Manchester Evening News, Wayne Rooney is interested in bringing 19-year-old Manchester United ace, Teden Mengi, to Derby County on a loan move this summer.
Mengi has captained the club’s academy team on occasions and is deemed to be a highly-rated centre-back. The player has also, at times, trained with the first-team, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deeming the player as a future-first team player. The 19-year-old has made only one appearance for the senior team which was against LASK Linz during the club’s 2019/20 Europa League campaign.
The youngster spent the second half of last season on loan at Pride Park under the guidance and tutelage of Wayne Rooney, as he helped Derby County avoid relegation from the Championship. However, Mengi’s spell ended sooner than he hoped due to an injury.

Rooney has reiterated previously that he wants to bring Mengi back on loan for the upcoming season, but with the club facing a transfer embargo, they were unable to make any new signings.
However, recently the Football League relaxed the rules and allowed Derby County to make five senior signings, however, there are restrictions on those signings. Any loan deal would have to be a maximum of six months and any permanent signing would have to be a Bosman on a 12-month contract.
Mengi has started in every pre-season game for Manchester United at the back alongside Axel Tuanzebe, but with the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, Eric Bailly, and the soon-to-be confirmed Raphael Varane set to join the team, the 19-year-old will fall down the pecking order for the coming season.

Thus, a loan move would serve Mengi well, especially under a Manchester United legend like Wayne Rooney, who knows the DNA of the club through and through and can provide Mengi with consistent first-team football as well.
