Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur eye Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie but face Arsenal battle

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato (h/t the Express), Tottenham Hotspur have identified Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapie as an ideal partner for Eric Dier in their defence. However, they face competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The 20-year-old centre-back has been valued at around £22million by Leverkusen, who believe they have a chance to rake in a decent sum for him in the upcoming transfer windows.

A full international for Ecuador with 21 caps to his name already, Hincapie is also on the radars of Italian clubs AC Milan, Napoli, and AS Roma. Hence, Spurs would be aware of the competition that comes when trying to sign a young and talented defender like him.

Spurs added to their defensive ranks this summer with the addition of Clement Lenglet. However, the Frenchman is only here on a season-long deal as of now.

Cristian Romero has proven to be a brilliant signing while Ben Davies, who is currently sidelined with a knock, is also very dependable. Hincapie, at 20, can be a long-term addition to our defence.

He may not slot into the starting XI right away but there is every chance that he becomes a regular starter in the coming years under manager Antonio Conte -granted Hincapie joins us and Conte stays until that point.

There are, of course, defenders like Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga, and loanee Joe Rodon in our ranks. However, it has become evident in the past year or so that they are not really seen as regular starters.

Hincapie still has little under four years to run on his current contract (Transfermarkt). And it remains to be seen if the Lilywhites can entice him to join Conte’s project next year ahead of the competition.
