Transfer News: Tottenham face Arsenal competition for Aaron Ramsdale

According to Sky Sports, Arsenal are interested in signing Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who has been linked with Tottenham Hotspur, ahead of the summer window.

Ramsdale is a product of the Sheffield United youth academy. Having risen through the ranks, the goalkeeper left for Bournemouth in 2017 before returning to Bramall Lane three years later in 2020.

Having come back to Sheffield United to replace Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson last summer, the 23-year-old found the going tough as the Blades defence was all over the place. Even though Ramsdale emerged with some credit, he wasn’t able to do enough to help the club stave off relegation.

However, Ramsdale, who was called up to the UEFA Euro 2020 as a replacement for the injured Henderson earlier this week, could be set for a swift comeback to the Premier League. Indeed, the goalkeeper has emerged as a target for Tottenham, as reported by the Daily Mail.

With Hugo Lloris entering the final phase of his career at Tottenham, it is time for the club to put in place a long-term succession plan for the French World Cup winner. Ramsdale, given his age, exposure and experience in the Premier League can be a good option for the Lilywhites.

However, now, Spurs’ arch-rivals Arsenal, too, have entered the race to sign Ramsdale, as claimed by Sky Sports, complicating matters for the club.

Football.london reported earlier this week that Tottenham are reluctant to lose Lloris this summer as he enters the final year of his contract. While keeping him at the club makes sense, it would be foolhardy not to plan for the future. Ramsdale, to that end, would be someone worth considering for the club.
