Transfer News: Newcastle United in ‘pole position’ to sign Tottenham flop Tanguy Ndombele

Newcastle United are now in pole position to sign £42million-rated Tottenham Hotspur flop Tanguy Ndombele, according to French outlet MediaFoot (h/t ChronicleLive).

Spanish club Villarreal are also in the running to sign Ndombele, but the Magpies are believed to be the favorites to land him. Now under Saudi ownership, Eddie Howe’s side is able to flex its muscles in the transfer market.

Ndombele signed from Olympique de Lyonnais for a club-record fee in the summer of 2019 and signed a six-year contract. It is safe to say that he hasn’t been able to impress any manager he has worked under at N17.

Antonio Conte even sanctioned a deal to let him on loan for Lyon in the winter transfer market earlier this year. That was perhaps a telling sign that Spurs don’t have the 26-year-old central midfielder in their plans.

What next for Ndombele?

Newcastle aren’t an immediate threat to Spurs but they can be in the future. They aspire to acquire quality players and gradually become one of the biggest clubs in England.

Spurs, meanwhile, haven’t won a trophy since 2008. If they let Newcastle overtake them in terms of trophies and the Premier League table in the near future, our status as a ‘big six’ club could be under threat.

It is no secret that Spurs want to sell off Ndombele. He was not picked for the club’s pre-season trip to Israel where they faced Israel while he was also not in the matchday squad against Southampton last weekend.
