Manchester United lower asking price for Sergio Romero ahead of potential January exit

According to The Mirror, Manchester United are ready to lower their asking price for Sergio Romero ahead of a potential exit in January.

The Argentine star has fallen down the pecking order this season. It can be argued that he is the fourth choice shot-stopper behind the likes of David de Gea, Dean Henderson, and Lee Grant.

He was keen to leave the club in summer but no deal was agreed upon. January now offers him another opportunity to leave the club he joined in 2015.

United wanted £5m for Romero but no club was prepared to meet that valuation. Neither the keeper nor his wife was happy to have to stay put.

As Romero reaches the end of his contract, United have threatened to trigger a contract extension clause in his deal as they continue to hold out for their asking price.

According to the report, United could settle for £2.5m. Having been left out of the Premier League and Champions League squads, Romero’s future at the club looks all but done.

He was linked with a move to both Everton and Inter Miami in the summer. However, his £100,000-a-week wages have proven to be a stumbling block. (h/t The Sun)

Not many can argue that Romero has not been an excellent backup goalkeeper. He has let in only 27 goals in 61 games for United, keeping an incredible 37 clean sheets. (h/t Transfermarkt)

A player who has given much to the club, it is pretty despicable how United have continued to hold him for ransom.

United players were unhappy with the way the club has treated Romero. The Argentine deserves better and United have let themselves down here.
