Assessing a record-breaking summer transfer window
Deadline Day deals: Alexander Isak, Piero Hincapie and Randal Kolo Muani
London Standard
A record-breaking summer window has closed. The British transfer record was broken twice by the same club, as Liverpool signed Florian Wirtz for £116million and followed it up with Alexander Isak for £125m on Deadline Day as they spent close to half a billion pounds. Arsenal, though, had the biggest outlay as Mikel Arteta was once again heavily backed in the form of eight new signings including Piero Hincapie.
Chelsea were again busier than most, signing the likes of Joao Pedro and Alejandro Garnacho, while also selling a record £300m in talent. Will that be enough to mount a title challenge? Tottenham will hope that the headline signing of Xavi Simons and the late addition of Randal Kolo Muani are enough to give them the creativity needed to compete in the league and Europe, having missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White and Eberechi Eze.
Manchester United signed Senne Lammens, but some targets failed to secure moves. No Carlos Baleba for Man Utd, no Marc Guehi for Liverpool, no Tyrique George for Fulham, no Manor Solomon for Crystal Palace, and more. Today, we break down the fallout from a stunning summer, so follow along live below with Standard Sport’s dedicated transfer news live blog!
