Arsenal are willing to push their talks for Mikel Merino all the way towards transfer deadline day, with it reported Real Sociedad have rejected an opening bid for the midfielder. Manchester United have identified Manuel Ugarte, Frenkie de Jong and Youssouf Fofana as their next targets after wrapping up deals for Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui, who have now officially joined from Bayern Munich for a combined fee totalling £60million.

Djed Spence is in line to feature in Ange Postecoglou’s plans this season.
The right-back’s future at Tottenham had been uncertain, after spending last season on loan at Leeds and Genoa.
However, Sky Sports report that Spence has impressed in pre-season and is likely to stay at the club for the upcoming campaign, particularly after Emerson Royal’s departure.
“I think he’s been very, very good for us this pre-season, in terms of the way he’s trained and his general attitude,” Postecoglou said earlier this summer.
“Maybe he’s learned a couple of things over the last couple of years about himself and hopefully we can sort of bear the fruit of that.
“He’s a very good player who fits into our football and so it’s as much about him as it is about me making a decision.”

Chelsea have confirmed Pedro Neto’s squad number ahead of the new season.
The former Wolves forward completed a shock move to Stamford Bridge last week after the Blues beat Tottenham to his signature.
Neto has signed a seven-year contract with the club following a £54m move from Molineux and was paraded in front of supporters for the first time during the 1-1 draw with Inter Milan on Sunday.
Chelsea are believed to have agreed to pay an initial £51.4m, with a further £2.6m coming in the way of achievable add-ons.
The club have now confirmed Neto will wear the No.19 shirt this season, last worn by Armando Broja, who has been the subject of interest this summer.
Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Diego Costa and Demba Ba are among those who have previously occupied the shirt.

Arsenal are said to require a significant first-team sale if they are to secure a move for Mikel Merino.
The Gunners are still in talks with Real Sociedad for the midfielder, who has agreed personal terms and wants the move to north London.
However, while The Athletic report that Arsenal are confident of reaching an agreement with Real Sociedad, there is a need to sell a player either before signing Merino or be confident of doing so by the end of the window.
Arsenal’s move for Riccardo Calafiori progressed due to Emile Smith Rowe’s departure.

Atletico are thought to have made tentative enquiries about the availability of former Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante, but his Saudi club Al Ittihad’s continued stance is that the France star is not for sale.
A host of clubs across Europe have been confident of convincing Al Ittihad to sell the 33-year-old, but the Saudi outfit have rebuffed all approaches.
Atletico still want to complete the Conor Gallagher deal, but are also exploring potential contingencies, with Kante appearing their favoured alternative despite Al Ittihad’s firm stance.
Chelsea’s move for the 20-year-old Atletico forward Samu Omorodion broke down in the final contractual stages earlier this week, creating the hitch for Gallagher.
Atletico and the Blues quickly shifted their discussions to talk about a possible deal for Joao Felix, who spent six months on loan at Stamford Bridge in the first half of 2023.
Chelsea are thought to believe they can broker a deal on favourable terms, that could solve two problems in one swoop.
