Transfer News: Barcelona rejected bid from Manchester United to sign Ronald Araujo

According to the Catalan news outlet El Nacional, Manchester United have seen their transfer bid to sign Ronald Araujo this January get rejected by Barcelona. He has quickly become one of the highly-rated centre-backs in world football and has attracted several interests as a result.

Barca have declined the £30million attempt from Man United to get the services of Araujo. He will enter the final year of his contract next summer, which has seen clubs like Chelsea and Liverpool keep tabs on the situation. That has made his current club prioritise an extension at the earliest to ward off such interest.

The 22-year-old wants to extend his stay at Camp Nou, but he wants to feel valued with a contract that would match his performances. However, there is an obvious hindrance in the way, looking at the financial difficulties that the Catalan club are going through at this instant.

The Manchester-based club is expected to come back with an increased offer which paints a clear picture of the degree of their interest. A £50million bid has been named as their next attempt, but it would only be the case next summer when they will have more cards in their hands due to the Uruguayan’s contract situation.

Keep the pressure on, Man Utd!

While the defensive issues are also a by-product of our midfield instability, we cannot simply ignore the fact that our options could use an upgrade based on the current circumstance. Eric Bailly and Phil Jones need to be replaced even if the latter had an inspiring performance after being sidelined for long periods.

Harry Maguire has underperformed this season, while Raphael Varane has not been at his best due to injury struggles alongside adaptation to the new league. Victor Lindelof has been solid overall, but there is still the lack of a commanding presence in the backline, which the Barca centre-back can fix. That is because the latter leads our defenders in multiple defensive actions like tackles, pressures and blocks, backed up by FBREF.

While Xavi Hernandez’s side is going through a financial toil, we cannot use that as a means to force them to accept a lower offer in this case. That is because the Uruguay international is crucial to their defensive set-up, and they would not want to lose him mid-season when they are in a rebuilding phase.

We would have more of an “advantage” at the end of the season, but it would depend on whether the Spanish side can free up their wage bill to meet the salary cap. The situation of Ousmane Dembele would act against our interest in such a situation since he seems set to depart next summer, which would, in turn, result in a reduction in their books. Let’s hope that we can see a favourable situation but, there are many things like the player’s desire to stay, acting against our interest.
