After his train journey down to Sheffield earlier this week failed to result in a move away from Celtic, the former AEK Athens goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas could now be heading to Sweden to sign for IFK Goteborg – that’s the latest news breaking this afternoon from reliable Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos.

Could Barkas be playing his football here?

Giannis Chorianopoulos was bang on the money every step of the way as Celtic pursued Barkas back in the summer of 2020. The transfer eventually went through with Celtic paying a record fee for a goalkeeper of around £4.5m following the decision taken by Fraser Forster to remain at Southampton and fight for his place rather than take up the offer of a permanent return to Celtic.

Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon is believed to have had Forster’s word that he’d be coming back but ultimately the huge wages he was on a Southampton meant that there was no Paradise return for the Englishman and instead Celtic turned attention to Barkas, who had performed well against Celtic in the 2018 Champions League qualifiers.

Barkas arrived in Scotland mid-pandemic, played his football mostly behind closed doors and never looked comfortable playing for the club. It should be noted that for a player coming over from Greece to play in Scottish football, with no fans and all sorts of restrictions on his private life while in a foreign country and with Celtic descending into a shambles of a club for almost all of last season, Barkas had little or no chance of succeeding.

Perhaps that could have changed under Ange Postecoglou, who was prepared to offer everyone their chance after arriving at the club, but Barkas never took that chance either and by August Joe Hart was brought in from Tottenham, as the confirmed first pick goalkeeper.

And Scott Bain, who recently signed a contract extension at the club, is the clear choice as back-up with several promising young goalkeepers at the club or doing well out on loan. So there seems to be no place for Barkas, helpfully he’ll get his move and an go on to restore his form and his confidence, maybe playing in Sweden as Giannis Chorianopoulos is indicating this afternoon.
