ARSENAL IN FOR TWO CITY DEFENDERS Harry Maguire may or may not be happy to hear that his status as the world’s most expensive defender is about to be lost to a centre-back heading to Manchester to join City.

The Treble winners are closing in the signing of Josko Gvardiol for a fee worth at least £86million. “Gvardiol and his agents gave us their desire to move to Manchester City,” said RB Leipzig sporting director Max Eberl over the weekend. “We are in talks with City. For €100million plus bonuses, Gvardiol will end up in Pep’s strong hands.”

Gvardiol’s arrival could squeeze out Aymeric Laporte, who is a target for Arsenal.

That’s the word from Mundo Deportivo, which also credits Juventus with an interest in the Spain defender. Arsenal could sign two City defenders this summer, with Givemesport suggesting that Joao Cancelo remains on Mikel Arteta’s radar after the Portugal full-back returned to the Etihad following half a season at Bayern Munich, who are now more interested in Kyle Walker. But Fabrizio Romano says City are keen to keep hold of the England defender.

NEWCASTLE EYE ENGLAND STARS ON LOAN While Newcastle prepare to unveil Sandro Tonali as their marquee signing of the summer, the Magpies are still working to sign at least one more midfielder.

The Telegraph says Eddie Howe wants to sign Kalvin Phillips or Conor Gallagher, probably on loan because Newcastle want you to believe that they’ve blown most of their budget on Tonali. Deals for either of the England midfielders may have to wait until later in the summer, with Phillips keen to suss out his prospects at City while new Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino wants to give Gallagher a chance during pre-season to prove himself worthy of keeping around.

Newcastle are also trying to sign Tino Livramento but they feel Southampton are being unrealistic with their demands. Saints want £30million; Newcastle are offering £21million for a player whose value was skyrocketing before he sustained a serious knee injury in April 2022 which kept him sidelined for more than a year.

Marca says the France star wants a package worth £206million from his next club when he leaves PSG, whether that’s this summer or next.

Which will be a problem if he wants to join Real Madrid, who believe Mbappe to be a ‘prisoner of money’. Real want Mbappe to get his head around the fact that he will have to take a pay-cut on his current £893,00-a-week salary if he is to play at the Bernabeu.
