Manchester City have completed the signing of a new goalkeeper to add to their first-team ranks as Marcus Bettinelli arrives from Premier League rivals Chelsea.

It is the second first-team arrival of a busy summer transfer window for Hugo Viana and Txiki Begiristain within the Etihad Stadium, following on from the arrival of Rayan Ait-Nouri in a £31 million switch from Wolves.

Pep Guardiola and his players are currently in the process of gearing up for the summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, where they will embark on an initial three-match group stage campaign against Morocco’s Wydad AC, the United Arab Emirates’ Al Ain, and Italy’s Juventus.

The signing of a new goalkeeper comes as Manchester City confirmed the pending exit of long-standing third-choice shot-stopper Scott Carson after six seasons with the club, with the Englishman’s contractual agreement expiring at the end of the month.

And with other major signings expected across the course of the oncoming 48 hours, a tidy piece of business has now been completed swiftly by Manchester City’s recruitment staff that adds further experience into their rebuild.

As Marcus Bettinelli completes his move to Manchester City during the first-half of the latest summer transfer window, here is everything you need to know about the deal!

What are the terms of Marcus Bettinelli’s move to Manchester City from Chelsea?

Marcus Bettinelli has signed a one-year contract at the Etihad Stadium running until June 2026, joining the club from Chelsea – who have received a nominal fee for the transfer.

What has Marcus Bettinelli said upon joining Manchester City?

“It’s an honour to sign for City. I have admired from afar what this Club have achieved since Pep Guardiola arrived and now, I am excited to be a part of building on that success.

“I can’t wait to work with Pep, Xabi Mancisidor and the excellent goalkeepers already here and see their methods up close. Hopefully I can contribute in training, the dressing room and on the pitch as we look to win more silverware over the next year.”

What has Hugo Viana said about the completed deal?

“We’re really pleased that we’ll be adding Marcus to our squad this summer. He’s been in the Premier League for a long time and will bolster what is already a strong goalkeeping unit.

“His experience and mentality will hopefully complement our other senior goalkeepers while ensuring he’s always ready to perform when called upon himself.”

What shirt number has Marcus Bettinelli selected at Manchester City?

There is currently no indication as to what shirt number Bettinelli will adopt, although the outgoing Scott Carson dons the number 33. The number 1 shirt also remains available.

Are there any clauses involved in the deal?

At present, it remains unknown as to whether there are any specific contractual clauses in Marcus Bettinelli’s Manchester City agreement.

When could Marcus Bettinelli make his debut for Manchester City?

The 33-year-old is widely expected to come into Manchester City’s first-team squad as a third-choice goalkeeper, and as such it remains unknown as to when an opportunity to make his debut could emerge.

However, with the FIFA Club World Cup around the corner, the United States-based tournament presents the first chance to be involved with Pep Guardiola’s first-team squad.

Are any further signings expected from Manchester City?

Manchester City are expected to finalise and announce a further two new arrivals into their first-team set-up this summer, with Tijjani Reijnders arriving from AC Milan and Rayan Cherki penning a similarly long-term agreement after he joins from Lyon.
