A transfer intermediary involved in the most recent transfer of Juventus star Timothy Weah has confirmed that, prior to his move to Turin, La Liga giants Atlético Madrid expressed a keen interest in his services.

Wide-man Weah for his part linked up with Juventus in the summer of 2023.

After the United States international made clear his readiness for a new challenge, the Bianconeri snapped him up from Lille, in a deal worth around €12 million all in.

As alluded to above, though, those in a position of power at the Allianz Stadium were not the only ones keen to lure Weah away from France.

Speaking in an interview with Tuttosport, as cited by Mundo Deportivo, on Monday, Sebastian Salaroli, who played a central role in the 24-year-old’s Juventus switch, revealed interest on the part of Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid.

Salaroli also confirmed, though, that in the end, Weah’s personal ties to Juve proved too much to overcome:

“Atlético were very interested, that’s true. At the same time, it is fair to say that Timothy has always had clear ideas about his future, giving priority to Juventus. He wanted to come to Italy. And when the Bianconeri called him, he accepted immediately. The decision to come to Juventus was his on the advice of his father George, who knew Serie A well and considered it the right league for Timothy ’s great past at Milan. His father supports Juve, so the marriage with Juventus was ideal from every point of view.”
