Burnley are preparing for life back in the Championship after their relegation from the Premier League.

The Clarets were promoted to the Premier League after winning the Championship title in the 2022-23 season, and many had expected them to be able to make the step up to the top flight, but it did not work out that way.

It was an incredibly disappointing campaign for Burnley, and they were relegated after winning just five games all season, accumulating a total of 24 points.

Vincent Kompany looks set to swap Burnley for Bayern Munich

Bayern's interest in Kompany is a shock, particularly given that the Belgian's refusal to change his style of play was largely blamed for Burnley's relegation, but it seems he is closing in on a move to the Allianz Arena, meaning the Clarets will need to find a replacement.

Coventry City manager Mark Robins and Birmingham City coach Ashley Cole were both said to be under consideration as potential replacements for Kompany last week, and according to journalist Sacha Tavoleri, Hull City coach Andy Dawson could also be a possible contender to take over at Turf Moor.

Burnley took a big gamble when they appointed Kompany two years ago, and it would be no surprise to see them take a similar approach this time around, but Dawson would be a risky choice.

Andy Dawson appointment would be a huge gamble for Burnley

Dawson has never had a permanent managerial role before, and while he has had spells as a caretaker at Scunthorpe United and Hull City, those stints raise concerns about his suitability for the Burnley job.

The 45-year-old took charge of one game as joint-caretaker manager of Scunthorpe in 2014, but his first spell as solo interim boss came in March 2019 following the sacking of Stuart McCall.

Scunthorpe were 18th in the table when Dawson took over on a temporary basis, but after failing to win any of their seven games under his guidance, the Iron were relegated to League Two as they finished 23rd.

It was a tough introduction to management for Dawson, and relegation marked the start of a decline for Scunthorpe which saw the club drop into the National League North, where they remain today, so there were plenty of problems for him to contend with at Glanford Park.

Having spent much of his playing career with the club, Dawson returned to Hull as an academy coach in September 2019 before he was promoted to the first team coaching staff three years later.

Dawson was appointed as caretaker manager following the departure of Shota Arveladze in September 2022, and he remained at the helm for just over a month until the appointment of Liam Rosenior.

The Tigers had lost their previous four games prior to Arveladze's exit, and while Dawson steadied the ship by winning three of his eight games in charge, the club sat 21st in the table at the end of his caretaker spell.

Of course, it is harsh to judge Dawson based on two brief interim stints, but it would be a big surprise if he was appointed as manager of Burnley, a club who will be expected to challenge for an immediate return to the Premier League next season.

Appointing young coaches has proven to be a successful formula in the Championship in recent years, with the likes of Enzo Maresca, Kieran McKenna, Michael Carrick and Danny Rohl all impressing, and the Clarets themselves won the title under an inexperienced manager in Kompany.

However, all of those managers had coaching experience at some of Europe's top clubs, so it would be a bold move for Burnley to opt for Dawson, and it is an appointment that would come with huge risks.
