The centre-back is close to agreeing a deal with the Ligue 1 side, having barely got on the pitch in the past 12 months

Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell is close to agreeing a £3.8 million switch to Ligue 1 side Toulouse, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The 21-year-old was deemed to be surplus to requirements for Daniel Farke’s side last season, having only featured in five Championship matches over the course of the campaign.

Nixon has reported that the son of ex-Whites striker Richard Cresswell is set to move to France, claiming that the deal is one that suits all parties, with the centre-back keen for the move abroad after a frustrating 12 months at Elland Road.

The Yorkshire side are looking to offload players to balance the books this summer, with funds needing to be raised to meet EFL financial regulations.

Charlie Cresswell set for Toulouse FC move after Leeds United career stalls

Cresswell will hope the move to France will help to kickstart his career, after enduring a tough time with the Yorkshire side due to lack of minutes on the pitch for the Whites.

After making his debut for the club in an EFL Cup clash with Hull City in 2020, big things were expected of the United academy graduate, but things haven’t quite panned out the way both player and club would have liked.

The England under-21 international went on to make five appearances while his current side were in the Premier League, before a promising loan spell at Millwall in the 22/23 campaign looked to have been the springboard he required to get back in the good books at Elland Road.

Doubts were cast over the defender upon his return to LS11 though, with boss Farke questioning the young star’s focus as he continued to drop down the pecking order with the Yorkshire side.

Although talks of a January move away were mooted, no one matched the £5 million price tag United put on his head, and it looks like that valuation has dropped with the Ligue 1 side getting him for considerably less this summer.

Cresswell only signed a new four-year contract with the club last summer, which saw him commit his future to the Whites until the summer of 2027, but 12 months on he looks to be leaving the side for good.

Cresswell is one of a number of names in line to leave Elland Road this summer, with the side having to raise millions of pounds to adhere to EFL financial regulations for the season ahead.

Spanish midfielder Marc Roca has already agreed a deal to return to his homeland, with the 27-year-old wrapping up a move to Real Betis earlier this week, while the same club are also said to be interested in bringing Diego Llorente [pictured] to the club.

The La Liga outfit will have competition from AS Roma in their hopes of bringing the defender to the club though, with the 30-year-old spending last season with the Serie A side, playing 29 league games for the Italian giants.

Speculation also persists over the futures of a number of star names at United this summer, with Crysencio Summerville linked with a Premier League move, alongside WIllie Gnonto, while a number of European sides have an interest in teenage wonder Archie Gray.
