Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham target Mohamed Simakan renews RB Leipzig contract

Tottenham Hotspur targeted a move for RB Leipzig’s Mohamed Simakan in the latest summer transfer window, as per beIN Sports.

Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were also credited with an interest in the 22-year-old centre-back. But no deal materialised and the player ended up staying at the Red Bull Arena.

He played a big role in his team’s DFB Pokal win last season and has started 19 games for them across competitions thus far. As a result of his good performances, Leipzig offered him a new deal just one and a half years into his stay with the club.

Tottenham wanted to pull off Mohamed Simakan signing this summer.

He accepted it and gave his thoughts on penning a new deal with the club. Simakan told Leipzig’s official website (h/t beIN Sports):

“It was a big step for me when I arrived at the club a year and a half ago. I felt happy here from day one and I was welcomed with open arms. That is really important for me as it allows me to perform on the pitch and to develop in the best possible way. “

As per transfermarkt, Simakan’s current contract expires in the summer of 2027. This would offer Spurs and other potential suitors further blow in their attempts to lure the young Frenchman away from Leipzig.

Quality young centre-backs are at a premium and Leipzig have two of them in Simakan and Josko Gvardiol – another player Tottenham have been linked with. The 20-year-old has been an immaculate presence for Croatia at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

There are plenty of other fish in the season and Spurs can always look at other targets if the ones they have been looking at become unattainable. Moreover, clubs that have made a reputation for selling proven young talent, such as Leipzig, can at times quote high valuations for their current crop of youngsters.

It’s not uncommon for that to happen. Perhaps Simakan and Gvardiol, who is also on Chelsea’s transfer radar, are two options that are far-fetched considering their hype, age, and popularity.

We are better off signing other options that seem more gettable but that doesn’t mean compromising on quality. A world-class defender has to be our priority. That is something that is undeniable.
