Ange Postecoglou planning changes ahead of pivotal Europa League quarter-final decider against Eintracht Frankfurt
Ange Postecoglou is expected to ring the changes for Sunday's visit to Wolves, which falls between the two legs of Tottenham's Europa League quarter-final tie against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Spurs drew the first leg 1-1 in north London and face a decider in Germany next Thursday to keep their season alive.
“It'll be about sort of managing minutes of some guys, but also getting some minutes into other guys,” Postecoglou, the Spurs head coach, said on Friday.
“We'll need a big game, big performance, on Sunday, so having some fresh legs will help.
“But also looking to next Thursday, like I said it's not just about resting guys or managing guys, it's also about having guys ready next week. It could go to 120 minutes and we need people ready to go, so a combination of those factors [means] we'll make some changes.”
Destiny Udogie and James Maddison were “cramping up” towards the end of the draw with the Bundesliga club and are likely to be among the players rested, along with Micky van de Ven and captain Heung-min Son.
Postecoglou could also choose to protect key midfielders Lucas Bergvall and Rodrigo Bentancur, who shone in the first leg, with Yves Bissouma, Pape Matar Sarr and Archie Gray all pushing for minutes.
"Some guys need games, you know. You can put them in cotton wool as much as you like, but some players need to play and they need to play pretty regularly, so it'll be a sort of combination of hopefully getting an outcome on Sunday and also having great preparation for Thursday," Postecoglou added.
Richarlison is pushing to start after returning from injury against Frankfurt, while on-loan forward Mathys Tel will want to build on his late goal from the penalty spot in last week's win over relegated Southampton.
Postecoglou has rubbished suggestions in Germany that Tel could return to Bayern Munich at the end of the season, despite Spurs having an option to buy the forward.
"Don’t believe everything that comes out of Germany press. Any press really these days. I shouldn’t say press but just information in general. The days of it being double-checked, triple-checked, triple-sourced are long gone," he said. "Matty’s important for us."
Predicted Tottenham XI (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, Romero, Davies, Spence; Bissouma, Sarr, Gray; Johnson, Richarlison, Tel
Injured: Danso, Kulusevski, Dragusin
Time and date: 2pm BST on Sunday April 13, 2025
