These two clubs have only ever met twice before. Tottenham prevailed 3-2 on aggregate in the Cup Winners' Cup quarter-finals of 1982 before, in the 2022 Champions League group stages, they drew 0-0 in Germany, with Spurs prevailing 3-2 in North London.
Overall, Tottenham have have only three of their last seven home games against German opposition, losing the other four. Frankfurt have won only two of seven visits to England in UEFA competition, but both victories came in the Europa League in London in the past six years.
Two former, two-time Europa League winners go head-to-head in North London, both desperate to reach the last four. For Tottenham Hotspur, following a catastrophic Premier League campaign, it's either win this competition or bust. A week ago, Ange Postecoglou's side were beaten 1-0 by fierce rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, their 16th league defeat of the season already. On Sunday, Brennan Johnson's double, followed by Mathys Tel's late penalty, did at least see the Lilywhites beat Southampton 3-1, but this was just their fourth win in 15, hence why they're down in 14th.
Meantime, Tottenham have lost only once in the Europa League so far, finishing fourth in the league phase, before overcoming AZ in the last 16. Following a 1-0 defeat in Alkmaar, Spurs fought back to win 3-1 at home, thanks to Wilson Odobert's brace, while James Maddison scored in-between. Tottenham won this competition in both 1972 and 1984, with supporters desperate to be in Bilbao on 21 May, but they'll feel a first leg victory is vital here, ahead of next Thursday's trip to Germany.
Eintracht Frankfurt meantime hoisted this trophy aloft in 1980 and three years ago, beating Rangers on penalties in Seville, fancying their chances of a repeat triumph. Dino Toppmöller's team finished fifth, just a point and a place lower than Spurs, in the league phase, before smashing Ajax 6-2 in the round of 16. Hugo Larsson and Ellyes Skhiri the scorers at the Johan Cruijff Arena, before Mario Götze was on target twice at Waldstadion.
Meantime, in the Bundesliga, die Adler's hopes of a top four finish suffered a set back on Saturday, beaten 2-0 by Werder Bremen at Weserstadion. So, despite losing four of their last six, Frankfurt remain third, two points clear of Mainz, who they face on the road in third-last fixture of the season. Thus, there is plenty for Eintracht to play for, confident of victory at Tottenham come Thursday night.
Ange Postecoglou is without Radu Drăgușin, Kevin Danso, Timo Werner and Dejan Kuluševski, but he certainly has options from which to choose. Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero started in the Premier League together for the first time since 8 December at Chelsea so, after the Dutchman was rested on Sunday, this duo are set to be reunited.
Elsewhere, Rodrigo Bentancur alongside Lucas Bergvall appears to be Postecoglou's first-choice midfield pairing, chosen over Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma. Meanwhile, Brennan Johnson's double at the weekend could see him get the nod over Wilson Odobert, hero of the previous round, out-wide. Bissouma and Bergvall will sit out the trip to Frankfurt if cautioned.
Tottenham Hotspur predicted lineup vs Eintracht Frankfurt: (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Spence; Bentancur, Bergvall, Johnson, Maddison, Son Heung-min, Solanke.
Son Heung-min has 11 goals to his name this season, while he bagged a brace the last time Frankfurt visited the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in October 2022.
Dino Toppmöller travels without first-choice goalkeeper Kevin Trapp as well as Timothy Chandler, Can Uzun, Junior Dina Ebimbe, Ansgar Knauff and Elye Wahi due to injury. Thus, Kauã Santos will continue to deputise between the posts, as he has done 11 times already this season.
Out-field, Rasmus Kristensen could displace Nnamdi Collins at right-back, with USMNT-eligable Nathaniel Brown on the other side. Mario Götze, who scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup Final of course, is one to look out for in attack.
Eintracht Frankfurt predicted lineup vs Tottenham Hotspur: (4-2-3-1): Santos, Kristensen, Koch, Theate, Brown; Tuta, Skhiri, Larsson, Götze, Bahoya, Ekitiké.
Since Omar Marmoush's move to Man City in January, Hugo Ekitiké has come to the fore, taking his tally to 19 goals for the season at home to Ajax, so will he net again?
Given Tottenham's miserable form all season long, we are backing Frankfurt for victory in North London, leaving them in the catbird seat to progress: Tottenham Hotspur 1-2 Eintracht Frankfurt.
