Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge feels Tottenham may look to send Matt Doherty out on loan in January.

The 29-year-old joined Spurs from Wolves in August 2020, but has failed to make a positive impression since his move to the capital.

What has happened to Doherty at Tottenham?

When he first arrived at Spurs, Doherty was the team's first-choice right-back ahead of Serge Aurier, but he struggled to cement his place in the side over the course of last season.

The 25-cap international may have hoped for more game time this term under the guidance of Nuno Espirito Santo - the duo previously worked together at Wolves.

Instead, he appears to have fallen even further down the pecking order, with the likes of Emerson Royal and Japhet Tanganga getting starts ahead of him in recent weeks. Overall, he has started just 13 league games for Tottenham over the last 15 months.

What has Bridge said about Doherty?

Bridge has acknowledged that Doherty, who Transfermarkt value at £14.4m, is out of the favour at the moment, and is not even convinced that Nuno rates the full-back anymore. He believes this could lead to the 6 foot 1 defender being loaned out at the start of 2022.

When asked by GIVEMESPORT whether Doherty could leave Tottenham on a temporary basis in January, Bridge replied: “Yeah, I think that could happen. I’ve not heard anything, but I don’t think even Nuno’s a massive fan of his.”

Is there any way back for Doherty at Spurs?

As things stand, it appears unlikely.

Having been unable to convince Jose Mourinho or Ryan Mason last season, he has been given even fewer opportunities since Nuno took charge of Spurs. At 29, it is hard to imagine Doherty making any sudden improvements to his game which could see him come back into the team.

Did Eric Dier score for Tottenham Hotspur on his Premier League debut for the club?

Yes No

The only way that Doherty may get a run in the side between now and January is if Emerson and Tanganga pick up injuries or a suspension.

Otherwise, it seems that perhaps a loan move would be best for Doherty. He may then get the chance to play regularly, and this could help him regain his confidence.

If this does happen, and he plays well elsewhere, there may be a glimmer of hope for Doherty to still be a success at Tottenham, as he does have a contract at the club until 2024.
