Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur contemplate a move to sign Sporting star Joao Palhinha

According to the Portuguese newspaper A Bola [Print Edition] via Sport Witness (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur are assessing their option to facilitate a move for Sporting star Joao Palhinha in the summer transfer window. His rapid rise over the past two years or so has attracted a host of attention from clubs across Europe.

Palhinha’s exit from the Portuguese side appears to be “inevitable” looking at the number of clubs who are considering the prospect of signing him this summer. Tottenham are one of them, but they are joined by Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Napoli in this pursuit.

That being said, Spurs seem like they could receive a small boost as the Italian side’s troubled finances could price them out of a transfer. In more good news for the English club, Ruben Amorim’s side are willing to sell the Portuguese international for £21.2million, which is way less than his £50.9million release clause.

Palhinha- a summer signing?

The North London side must do their best to get their hands on the 26-year-old as their midfield needs to be strengthened ahead of the next campaign. After all, having just four options is not good enough moving forward, even if Antonio Conte normally uses a two-man pairing.

Even then, an injury or a suspension could seriously dent the season, with Oliver Skipp’s current injury being the best example of such a case. What’s more, it is also necessary to have a good depth in our squad to keep the players fresh, as we would engage in several competitions at once.

The 2022 Qatar World Cup being during a campaign further adds to the fixture congestion preventing the key players from enjoying adequate rest due to international duty. Hence, signing Palhinha should be one of our priorities, especially if we want to deal with the added challenge of Champions League football.

Fortunately, it seems that the Primeira Liga ace is in line to leave his current club, which certainly bodes well for us. Luciano Spalletti’s side potentially being out of contention is another factor that could boost our chances of securing the holding midfielder’s services.

It would have been quite difficult if Amorim’s team would decide to be stubborn and demand that the release clause be paid in full. Fortunately, that is not the case, and the price tag seems like a steal looking at Palhinha’s quality and the competition for his signature. Hence, we should look to finalise a deal at the earliest before this opportunity gets out of our hands.
