Sam Johnstone has had an “unbelievable season” and is capable of replacing Hugo Lloris at Tottenham, according to Paul Robinson.

The former White Hart Lane number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, heaped praise on Johnstone, 28, but went on to claim his former Burnley teammate Nick Pope would be a better choice.

ESPN report that Spurs are leading the chase to sign Johnstone from West Brom this summer, with the Englishman viewed as an inexpensive replacement for Lloris.

Albion’s number one, who worked with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford in 2016, has kept six clean sheets this season and more impressively, no goalkeeper in Europe’s top five leagues has made more saves. (Wyscout)

However, Robinson is adamant that his former club should target Burnley’s Pope instead, even if he is a more expensive option.

“I think Johnstone is a goalkeeper capable of replacing Hugo Lloris,” he told Football Insider.

“He has had an unbelievable season at West Brom but I would like to see Spurs go for Nick Pope. He is a better goalkeeper and he has been nothing short of brilliant at Burnley.

“He is England’s number two ahead of Dean Henderson, which is a huge vote of confidence.

“He has had a great season again at Burnley and I still think there is more to come from him. For me, he is a better goalkeeper than Dean Henderson and Sam Johnstone.

“Yes, you could get Johnston for cheaper than Nick Pope but I think they would be better off paying that bit more.”
