Tottenham have prioritised a move for Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster to act as back-up for the club going forward.

The 34-year-old is out of contract at St Mary’s this summer and will not pen a new deal, allowing him to leave on a free.

The Athletic report that he is Spurs’ preferred candidate to come in and act as cover for first choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and he will be offered a deal next week upon the conclusion of the campaign.

Current back-up goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini will return to Italy this summer at the end of his loan spell and Tottenham are eager to replace him with a homegrown option.

Forster is not expected to play a part in Southampton’s final game of the season and said his goodbyes to team-mates on Thursday at training.

Capped six times by England, he made 134 Premier League appearances for the Saints after joining from Celtic in 2014.
