Tottenham produced a superb display to beat Manchester City 2–0 at the Etihad Stadium.
Goals from Brennan Johnson and João Palhinha sealed a deserved victory for Thomas Frank’s side, who now boast five goals, two clean sheets and six points from their opening two matches.
City might easily have taken the lead in the first half, but Omar Marmoush was wasteful with a string of opportunities. His first came on 10 minutes, dragging a shot across goal and just wide after Pedro Porro’s mistake at the back.
The Egyptian then tested Guglielmo Vicario twice - first with a crisp strike from distance that the Spurs keeper palmed away, before being denied again when Erling Haaland slipped him through on goal.
In between those chances, City lost left-back Rayan Aït-Nouri to injury, a blow that Tottenham quickly exploited.
With the hosts unsettled, Mohammed Kudus flicked a long ball into the channel for Richarlison, whose low cross was hammered in by Brennan Johnson. The flag initially went up for offside against the Brazilian, but VAR confirmed the goal.
If James Trafford could do little about the first, the goalkeeper was badly exposed for Spurs’ second. Trying to play out from the back, his poor pass was seized upon by Pape Sarr, who fed Richarlison. Trafford tried to atone but only succeeded in diverting the ball into João Palhinha’s path, and the midfielder made no mistake from close range.
Haaland had the chance to halve the deficit before the break but sent his header over from Rayan Cherki’s delivery, and City never really recovered.
Though they improved after the restart, Guardiola’s side struggled to create any chances. Rúben Dias, Rodri and Bernardo Silva all saw half-chances with headers, but none troubled Vicario.
At the other end, Trafford was forced into a sharp double save late on to deny Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odobert, preventing Spurs from running up an even bigger margin. Still, Tottenham’s 2-0 victory was more than enough to send them top of the early Premier League table.
