Revealed: Tottenham stopped Harry Winks from joining Everton

According to Fabrizio Romano (h/t Liverpool Echo), Tottenham blocked Harry Winks from joining Everton in the summer. Apparently, Everton were keen on the midfielder but Spurs stepped in and blocked the move because they wanted a higher offer.

It almost feels like Harry Winks has been around forever. That is the case as he was fast-tracked into the side from a young age under Mauricio Pochettino. However, not many would have predicted how Winks has regressed in the last few seasons, losing his place in the side frequently.

Last Saturday, Winks drew a look of flak for his tepid and ineffective performance in the one hour he was on the field against Crystal Palace. Not to entirely fault him but he hardy provided anything of note while on the ball and got overwhelmed as Palace ran riot. Winks was subsequently dropped from the lineup against Rennes.

It would seem Spurs had a good chance to offload Winks in the recent summer transfer window. Everton were the interested party but an exit was blocked by Spurs. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano shed some light on the same via his Here We Go podcast (h/t Liverpool Echo).

No exact figures were mentioned but it would seem the money was the issue. In hindsight, Spurs might have been better served to let go of a player who is yet to fulfil his promise and is not a regular in the side. Given his recent performances, it would be a doubt if they can get him off their books easily in the future.
