As confirmed by the club’s official website, Tottenham Hotspur star Son Heung-min has been shortlisted for the 2020 FIFA Puskas Award for the Goal of the Year for his solo strike against Burnley.
The strike in question came in our 5-0 win over the Clarets back in December last year.
It was a moment of magic that will remain long-etched in the memories of the fans. The 28-year-old picked up the ball on the edge of our box and then went on a slaloming run. He left six Burnley players tattering in his wake, before calmly slotting the ball past Nick Pope in the goal.
In the process, Sonny had covered a total of 71.4 metres, in just 11 seconds before making the Clarets’ net bulge. It was the second-longest distance travelled by a player to score a goal in a PL match, behind Andros Townsend for Crystal Palace in 2016/17.
Son’s strike had been named the Premier League 2019/20 Goal of the Season. It was also picked as the BBC Match of the Day’s Goal of the Season as well the club’s Goal of the Season for the 2019/20 campaign.
Sonny’s goal against Burnley had also been named as our ‘Goal of the Decade’ for 2010-2019. And now, it also has been shortlisted for the prestigious Puskas Award. (h/t TottenhamHotspur.com)
Son’s strike is one among ten goals shortlisted for the Puskas Award.
He will now go up against Shirley Cruz (Costa Rica v Panama), Giorgian De Arrascaeta (Ceara SC v CR Flamengo), Jordan Flores (Shamrock Rovers v Dundalk), Andre-Pierre Gignac (UANL Tigres v Pumas UNAM), Sophie Ingle (Arsenal Women v Chelsea Women), Zlatko Junuzovic (SK Rapid Wien v Red Bull Salzburg), Hlompho Kekana (Mamelodi Sundowns v Cape Town City), Leonel Quinonez (Universidad Catolica v CSD Macara), Luis Suarez (Barcelona v RCD Mallorca) and Caroline Weir (Manchester City Women v Manchester United Women).
