Liverpool journalist Emmet Gates reckons that Harry Kane remains in the conversation to be named amongst the best players in the Premier League despite his slow start to the season.

Kane is yet to find the net in the league this term but has scored at least 18 goals in each of the previous seven campaigns for his club.

What's the latest news with Kane?

It's been a testing start to the season for the England captain, whose failure to get himself on the scoresheet against Aston Villa on Sunday marked his joint-longest drought in the competition.

One of those appearances was as a late substitute against Wolves, but Kane has been far from his best since returning from England duty at the Euro's and is still clearly feeling the effects from his failed transfer to Manchester City following months of ongoing talks.

Kane has scored six goals in four games in the Carabao Cup and Europa Conference League, including a hat-trick against Slovenian minnows Mura last Thursday, but the striker has looked far from his clinical best which has seen him become one of the most feared frontmen in Europe.

This is Kane's eighth season in Tottenham's first-team, but he's second to Jimmy Greaves in the club's all-time goalscoring list and already sits seventh on the Premier League scoring charts, only nine goals behind Thierry Henry.

His overall Premier League record stands at 166 goals in 251 appearances, and when asked who's amongst the best in England's top-flight at present, Gates certainly didn't discount the Spurs man.

What did Gates say?

He told GIVEMESPORT: "Harry Kane has had an indifferent start to the season, but you can't write off his past three or four years with Tottenham."

Who is the best player in the Premier League?

Kane's goalscoring record means that he certainly deserves a mention, but right now, it's difficult to look past Mohamed Salah.

Did Tottenham Hotspur sign Moussa Sissoko on transfer deadline day in 2016?

Yes No

The Egyptian, who's scoring and assisting on an almost weekly basis, is some distance above anyone else in the league and showed exactly why he's so good with his scintillating individual goal against Manchester City on Sunday.

Despite his recent drought, there's still an argument that Kane is the best in his position, but in terms of overall, Salah probably takes that crown.
