Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane reacts after England beat Wales to make 2022 FIFA World Cup last 16

Tottenham Hotspur superstar Harry Kane is a man under pressure whenever he leads the line for England nowadays. The weight of the captain’s armband for the Three Lions has sunk many greats in the past.

But he has been impeccable in this tournament so far. Kane was a starring presence in England’s 3-0 win against Wales in the final 2022 FIFA World Cup group-stage game.

He set up an incredible one-on-one chance for Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford, who could not beat the goalkeeper. Rashford then redeemed himself with an audacious free-kick.

A low cross from Kane in the second half found Manchester City’s Phil Foden at the far post, who had an easy task of tapping the ball home. Rashford then wrapped up the three points with another goal to make it 3-0 on the night.

Kane is two goals away from matching Wayne Rooney’s all-time record for 53 goals for the England national team. Many thought that tally could be matched, or even overtaken, in the 2022 FIFA World Cup group stages, but that hasn’t happened.

If someone told you England will score nine times in the group stages, there would be very few who wouldn’t have predicted Kane to not score any of those. But his presence as a creator, out wide and in the number 10 pocket, has been vital for manager Gareth Southgate.

Kane has evolved from a goalscorer to a striker who can do just about everything in the book – even the work of a creative midfielder. After the game, the 29-year-old centre-forward posted a video on his Twitter account and captioned it:

“Brilliant from the lads tonight. Bring on the knockouts 💪”

He also highlighted that the round of 16 game against Senegal will be a ‘tough one’. But Three Lions will expect the 1966 World Cup winners to get over the finish line in that game with relative ease.
