According to the South Korean Yonhap News Agency (h/t The Telegraph), Tottenham Hotspur superstar Son Heung-min has successfully completed his basic military training in South Korea. The 27-year-old finished the three-week course on Friday. He finished among the top five of his class.
Son entered the Marine Corps training camp on the southern island of Jeju on April 20. He smartly underwent his training while the Premier League was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic. This ensured that the player did not miss any of our matches.
Son’s graduation ceremony was closed to the public because of the social distancing restrictions in South Korea. That, however, did not stop a number of fans from gathering outside.
The Spurs star proved his competency doesn’t just lie on the football pitch as he finished near the top of his class of 157 trainees. According to the report, Son was presented with the “Pilsung” prize, given to the top five performing trainees. (h/t The Telegraph)
The striker also earned a perfect score in shooting. Hardly surprising given how clinical he is in front of the goal. Speaking on his training, a Marine Corps officer confirmed that the player stuck to his training faithfully. (h/t The Telegraph)
“All the courses were judged in a fair and strict manner, and his military training officers have said he went through the training faithfully.”
It is mandatory for every physically able man in South Korea to serve in the military for 21 months. However, Son earned himself a reprieve by helping his national team win a gold medal at the Asian Games football tournament in 2018.
After basic training, Son still has community service obligations to finish by 2023 to complete all military duties. (h/t The Telegraph)
The club has already confirmed that the player will return to the club next week. The Premier League is attempting to find a way to resume the tournament next month. However, group practice sessions have not yet started.
