Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur to sign Charlie Sayers from Southend United

According to Basildon Canvey Southend Echo News, Tottenham Hotspur are expected to sign Southend United teenager Charlie Sayers amidst hints of a transfer from Kevin Maher, the manager. It could be the first signing for Spurs under the managerial tenure of Antonio Conte.

Sayers has been on trial with Tottenham over the past two weeks and is set to join the club. They are engaged in negotiations with his parent club over a permanent transfer, and an agreement is expected to follow. Maher got asked about the future of the youngster, to which he replied:

The 17-year-old has played six matches for his childhood club and has played in several positions during that period. Primarily a left-back, he could also play as a centre-back or a left midfielder showing his versatility, which is always a great asset to have.

The left-back would probably join the youth system before getting a shot at first-team football given his age and inexperience. Should he continue to impress in the academy, he could make the jump to the senior side, especially considering his versatility.

Where can he fit?

Looking at Conte’s tactics, there are many opportunities where the Englishman could look forward to making a mark. Since he can play as a fullback or a wide midfielder, he could slot into the role where Sergio Reguilon plays currently.

Similarly, his ability to play as a central defender could help him get into the position that Ben Davies is currently playing in. Davies is a natural left-back, but the Italian has shifted him to a left-sided centre-back role to assist the team in multiple ways.

However, he would need to prove himself in the youth system before getting to this point and the aforementioned scenarios are something we don’t have to think about right. Reguilon is a solid option down the left while Ryan Sessegnon is doing pretty well whenever called upon- bar the game against NS Mura.

And so for now, a place in Wayne Burnett’s U23 side would be beneficial for everyone involved. Sayers can enjoy some time out in the sun while Conte and co would be better able to assess his abilities before giving a run-out with the big boys.
