Tottenham Hotspur interested in taking Barcelona star Clement Lenglet on loan

According to the Spanish publication Sport (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Barcelona star Clement Lenglet on a loan move in the summer transfer window. He is far down the pecking order at Camp Nou, which has seen his future surrounded by uncertain waters ahead of the next season.

Barca are ready to part ways with Lenglet as he is not in Xavi Hernandez’s plans for the next campaign. Tottenham are looking to take advantage and have expressed their interest in signing the defender. However, the English club only wants to take him on a season-long loan while also having no obligation to buy him permanently.

That’s not all, as Spurs are also unwilling to pay the Frenchman’s full wages worth over £5million net per season. That is understandable as the centre-back has been subpar for quite some time, and taking him even on loan poses considerable risk. Antonio Conte is stated to be open to the idea, but whether a move can be finalised or not remains to be seen.

Lenglet, a good choice?

Lenglet has struggled to earn minutes with the moment instant. The former’s situation is down to his inconsistent form, tendency to make mistakes, and failure to impose himself on his opponents.

Lenglet is an able passer of the ball who can progress possession up the pitch with ease, but he falls off considerably when it comes to the defensive aspects based on his recent displays. He is a shadow of his former self, looking at his days at Sevilla or even the initial couple of years with the Blaugrana.

As such, the fans would not feel delighted to see the North London side target someone who has not fared well in recent years. The conditions do hint at the fact that Tottenham could potentially be looking to use the La Liga ace merely as a squad player. Then again, players like Japhet Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez can do a similar job which questions Lenglet’s signing.

However, if Conte does believe that he can use Lenglet among his options, then the club must back the boss by bringing in the central defender. However, we must do our best to reduce the risk involved, so paying a lower salary is one such way to carry out that task.

Since the Spanish club are looking to move out Lenglet, their stance does favour our interests, although we have to wait and see whether they would accept our conditions. Perhaps we could agree to an optional clause to sign the French international permanently. After all, that would give us the chance to activate the option if he does succeed at N17.

Whether the Barca defender would accept our approach for a loan or not would only be known in due time.
