Tottenham Hotspur send message to Hugo Lloris after France qualify for 2022 FIFA World Cup last 16

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has captained France to the last 16 stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after his team’s 2-1 win against Denmark on 26 November.

France have won both their games after beating Australia 4-1 in their World Cup opener. Lloris was superb for Les Bleus in the win against the Danes as they barely secured the win.

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) superstar Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring in the 61st minute before Andreas Christensen promptly scored the equaliser for the Danes. Mbappe was on hand to score an 86th-minute winner after a brilliant cross from Antoine Griezmann.

Lloris was understandably jubilant after the full-time whistle. With Argentina and Germany’s losses so far in this World Cup, qualification for the last 16 cannot be taken for granted, even if you’re the defending champions of the world.

After the full-time whistle, Tottenham Hotspur’s official Twitter account sent the following message to the former Olympique Lyonnais man:

As compared to outfield players, the fitness level and fatigue of goalkeepers aren’t that much of an issue. And that is why we can expect to see Lloris captain the team against Tunisia.

The match against the African country isn’t a dead rubber, however, with the top spot in Group D still up for grabs. He won the World Cup with France in Russia four years ago.

Another one of these trophies in his cabinet would make him immortal. No active goalkeeper in world football has won the World Cup twice – the last country in world football to defend the World Cup trophy, meanwhile, were Brazil… 60 years ago.
